Where did the Crouthamels come from?

The History

The pioneer ancestor of the Crouthamel family of Bucks County was Andreas Krauthamel, who emigrated from Germany in the ship "Edinburg", arriving in Philadelphia on September 30, 1754, and settling in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Henry Krauthamel, son of Andreas Krauthamel, accompanied his father from Germany when a lad, and on arriving at manhood settled on a tract of land in Bedminster Township, Bucks County, which he subsequently purchased of William Allen, Esq. Henry died in 1816 leaving a widow, Catherine and nine children; Andrew, Catherine, wife of Jacob Nace, John, Henry, George, Elizabeth, wife of Michael Rush, Abraham, Jacob and Samuel.

George Crouthamel, fourth son of Henry, was born in Bedminster Township, and spent his whole life there. He died in 1855. He married a Rush and raised a family of five children. They were: Cathereine, Nancy, Tobias, Henry and Peter. He was a farmer and lived on a portion of the old homestead in Bedminster, purchasing later the Jacob Yost farm near Keller's Church.

Peter R. Crouthamel, youngest son of George, was born in Bedminster Township in the year 1812. He was reared on his father's farm and early in life learned the trade of shoemaker but later learned the trade of carpenter, which he followed in Bedminster for 25 years in connection with the conduct of a small farm conveyed to him by his father in 1834 upon which he lived until 1841, when he purchased of the estate of his father-in-law, Frederick Ott, a farm of 50 acres.

He sold the farm in 1856 and purchased one in Hilltown Township. In 1865, he sold out and moved to Illinois where he resided for one year, and then removed to Boone County, Iowa. There he purchased a farm and resided till his death in 1892.

He had married Catherine Ott, daughter of Frederick and Eve Ott of Bedminster. She was a granddaughter of Peter and Catherine Ott, the former of whom, as well as his father, Henry Ott, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

According to records, Andreas and Henry started from Rotterdam, stopped enroute at Cowes, England. It is presumed they came originally from the Palatinate and Wirtemberg.

Prior to arriving in Philadelphia, Andreas and Henry, along with others, swore allegiance to the British Crown as per the following list 220C as recorded in the Court House in Philadelphia.

"At the court house at Philadelphia Monday, the 30th September, 1754 Present: The Worshipped Charles Willing, Esq., Mayor.
